Haunted By God: Echoes on the Journey

Congregational Retreat

"After you took leave of my house, I saw on the floor the footprints of God" — American Indian Proverb

Several people have recently asked: "Many of us never made your earlier retreats in past years; would you ever repeat one of them?" Rather than repeat a specific retreat, this silent guided week will 'touch back into' various past themes in order to notice:

"Where am I today? What is God inviting me to now in my spiritual journey?"

We will approach the themes below in 'refreshed-revitalized' ways — inviting us to 'pray anew' with the God of Love who 'haunts' us (in the most profound sense of that word/Word).

New prayer suggestions, films, songs, and insights will accent: the calls of God within a prayerful/contemplative life of service; connections between passion and mysticism; the ever-deepening challenges in the Life of Love; links between 'life transitions' and 'Spirit-transformations'; the 'love for mercy' and the 'mercy of love'; ongoing growth in a compassionate, just, and peaceful life.

N.B. Open to all, whether familiar or not with past retreats; please bring a Bible and a notebook/journal.

Rediscovering and Renewing Passion on the Spiritual Journey
Mini-Sabbath Experience (3 Weeks)

This 3-week Sabbath time will explore the call to Passion in our lives, especially in light of its importance in the spiritual journey. If the God of Love is also the God of Mystery, how does Passion as a Life-Force bear witness to the Mystery of Love? And how might I both "rediscover and renew" Passion within my life's journey towards being more alive In-Spirit?

Our 3 weeks will include: morning workshops/presentations; free afternoons/evenings (with options available); suggestions for prayer/reflection; spiritual companioning (direction); availability of daily Eucharist; electives (art, t'ai chi, yoga, massage, basket weaving, films). Several guest speakers, elective teachers, and Sabbath facilitator, Bro. Michael, will be our presenters.

The second week of the Sabbath will be devoted to a guided retreat:

"A Spirituality of Film: The Realities of God's Grace" (See program below for description).

It is hoped that this will aid in 'depthing' our theme within a silent contemplative time (which will include daily spiritual companioning).

A Spirituality of Film: The Realities of God's Grace

This silent guided retreat will focus on two themes - intertwined: the 'reality/ies of Grace' and 'film as both art and parable'. Together we will reflect on the various aspects of 'real Grace' as experienced in our concrete daily lives - our own 'lived stories' alive with Grace.

Morning presentations and evening film screenings will hopefully encourage us to pray with God's movements in our lives - including through the power of the art of films as parables of Grace. Topics included:

  • The power of 'real Grace'
  • How does Grace change us?
  • Integrating the 'un-gracious' experiences of life
  • The 'ascensions of Grace' in Love
  • Can 'anything/everything be different' with Grace?
  • Extensions of Grace into the world/creation

Schedule will allow for quiet times of prayer, reflection, journaling, and daily Eucharist. Handouts (including focus points for each film) will be available. For anyone interested, a new option will offer discussion times centered on our prayer and film experiences.
